Do you know what foods are best for you and your body? Does your body need animal protein? Or do you have more energy when you eat vegetarian meals?

In an earlier post, I wrote that whatever we want in our lives, it starts with food. If we don’t have any energy to do the things we want and need to do to make changes, we stay stuck. I encouraged you to pay attention to how you feel after you eat certain foods, and then check-in and see how you feel two hours afterwards.

How to connect the dots

So if you kept track of this, now what? What does it mean if you hit a slump after eating pasta?  Most of us don’t know how to connect the dots. We try to eat healthier, but we miss the step of listening to our body and determining what we really need. Some people get a lot of energy from pasta. For me, I crash. Foods like pasta have the same effect on me as if I ate two candy bars!

You are unique. The foods or diets that work great for your co-workers, sisters, or daughters, may not work well at all for you.

Connecting what you ate with how you feel simply takes paying attention. You can begin finding those missing pieces to the “I want to feel better” puzzle with some patience and persistence.

When you eat protein in the morning, did that boost your energy? If you had a glass of wine in the evening, how do you feel in the morning?

How do you feel after you eat dairy products? Or sugar? Or a meal with mainly veggies and grains?

Focus on whole foods

This doesn’t have to be complicated. Focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible. Then take a few minutes and check your energy levels. Check in with your gut. Are you bloated?

Food that fuels you will usually increase your energy. And foods that are not the right for you can have any number of effects. They may drain your energy, cause bloating, increase congestion, or even spark a headache.

While our society has become accustomed to taking a pill to feel better, good health starts from the inside. Give your body foods it loves and you can transform your health — and a lot faster than you think.
